Abstract
Objectives: One important aspect of conversational competence is the ability to maintain and expand a topic of conversation. The present study investigated contingent discourse that either did or did not add new information in school-aged children with high-functioning autism (HFA) spectrum disorders.

Methods: The participants were 12 children with HFA age 7 to 12 years, 12 typically developing children matched for chronological age with HFA children (CA group), and 12 typically developing children matched for language age with HFA children (LA group). Conversational samples were collected individually by an examiner. The rate of conversation turns according to contingency (imitation, contingent, non-contingent), contingent turn¡¯s according to informativeness (added information, did not add information), and subtypes of contingent turns were measured.

Results: The results were as follows: the HFA group revealed a significantly higher rate of non-contingent and lower rate of contingent turns than the CA and the LA groups; the HFA group showed a significantly higher rate of contingent turns that did not add information and lower rate of contingent turns that added information than the CA group; and the HFA group showed a significantly higher rate of expansion than the LA group in contingent turns that added information. Also, the HFA group showed significantly a higher rate of recoding than the CA and the LA groups in contingent turns that did not add information.

Conclusion: We discuss the contingent discourse ability of school-age children with HFA spectrum disorders based on these results.
